Historic Birthday

On this day in 1851, Walter Reed, famous American army surgeon, was born in Gloucester co., Va. Walter Reed is primarily responsible for proving that Yellow Fever was transmitted through a mosquito vector, rather than direct contact.

Why is this notable to me? I was born in 1961, in Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C. A tenuous connection, I realize - but I'll take it anyway. :)

I owe my life to ignorance of how yellow fever is transmitted
My great-grandfather was the navigator of a Danish sailing ship. One day, the ship docked in Pensacola, Florida. My G-GF was the first person off the ship. He discovered that there was a yellow fever epidemic in town. When he reported this to the rest of the crew, they wouldn't let him back on the boat.

My G-GF was forced to remain in Pensacola. He contracted yellow fever, but recovered. He married a widow whose husband had died in the epidemic.

If the crew of my great-grandfather's ship had known what Walter Reed discovered, I wouldn't be here today to type this comment.
