DSL Changeover

The Telus man comes today to switch over our "Standard" DSL to a higher bandwidth version, since I'm using it for work. It's all supposed to be done in one trip, they will give me a new phone line, with the high speed on it, and switch everything over. When I turn everything back on, it's supposed to "just work".

We'll see about that.

Wish me luck...

But as we know, luck is in the hands of the DM, and the DM is evil. :)

Luck was not to be mine. At 10 am yesterday morning my current DSL was turned off. It took me an hour of diagnosis to realize that the problem was on their end. A call to tech support confirmed it. All disconnects are done at the central office at around 10am. I asked if they thought it would make more sense to turn off the old service AFTER they turned on the NEW service... but that just made too much sense. Many apologies were offered, but I had no internet connection all day yesterday.

Then, the friendly and helpful phone repairwoman showed up at 5 to do the install. She ran a wire around the house, I had to clear out a closet that she needed to use as an entry point, then she drilled holes and such. At around 6:30, it was done, but as she's leaving she tells me there is a "line problem on the street" and it isn't working. Wait, I says, the one right next to it was working FINE. "I don't know. The line repair guys are all gone, I'll have to work on it in the morning."

So I drove to the office today, still unsure whether I will have my connection back up or not. Since I'm working from home now most of the time, this is a bit more than an inconvenience.

Ah well!
